Resently I oppened a Mexican Store in Slovenija and for my disappointment I found myself struggling with different problems. I'll talk about now about one of them, the Cultural Appropriation.
Like many of you know, Mexico is famous for many things like the food, the warm of people, the beach, etc. But many people also think that Mexico is only Cactus and desert and narcos (thanks Hollywood for showing only that), Mexico is a country full of culture, we have reported so far 68 ethnic groups according with the Secretaria of Cultura of Mexico:
Zapoteco de Ixtlan
Chontal de Oaxaca
Mixteco de la Costa
Mixteco Zona Mazateca
Tepehuan del norte
Mixteco Mixteca Alta
Mixteco Mixteca Baja
Tepehuan del sur
Chontal de Tabasco
From this ones the most famous are the Mayans, Otomi, Huicholes and Nahualt, unfortunately their recent famous is not for what they represent, it is more for the Suffers they have been due to the fashion industry.
Many times, people go to this famous design stores and they found extremely beautiful clothes with embroidery designs and they think, ohhhh I love this shirt!, or dress or whatever the item is and turns out that this beautiful piece is a plagiarism from a Ethnic group, the problem here is this THEY DON'T GIVE THE CREDIT TO THE AUTORS, they don't say were did they copy this design and worse they try to take them looks as theirs and their descriptions says "Multicolored bag, multicolored shirt, "colorful embroidered animal print" etc., do you see where am I going?
"cultural appropriation is the adoption of some specific elements of one culture by a different cultural group. It describes acculturation or assimilation, but can imply a negative view towards acculturation from a minority culture by a dominant culture. It can include the introduction of forms of dress or personal adornment, music and art, religion, language, or social behavior. These elements, once removed from their indigenous cultural contexts, can take on meanings that are significantly divergent from, or merely less nuanced than, those they originally held."
I'm facing this problem and I'm seriously angry, because people lost completely the respect of what a handmade real ethnic design represent. Even worse because this copies are made in mass production in other countries at really low prices (but sells them real high), people want to have this pieces almost for free and don't value the job and meaning of the garment that they have in their hands.
Tell me have you seen this situation in your country? What do you think about it.
